Studio Update: March Madness / by Ill-Advised

I’ve decided to start posting regular “studio updates” about the progress of the upcoming record. Those of you who already follow the band or are other independent musicians and bands might find these posts interesting as I will be writing about the different challenges I face and the methods I have been using to record an album in my home studio.

With the tentative release date for the record later this fall, I’ve kicked things into overdrive hitting the studio every single day in between classes. The record has been narrowed down to eleven songs from over thirty and I’m largely happy with how this group of songs are turning out. Every song has a unique sound and perspective lyrically and the more I listen to them the more they begin to fit a storyline or concept. Recording this album is like re-experiencing the past few years of my life and in the most general sense, I think it’s an album about growing up.

Luckily, I have been given the opportunity to record at my University’s studio which I am utilizing to track vocals. There is something to be said for a well-treated room when it comes to recording vocals - and a nice pre-amp. So far, I’m really happy with the results and it’s great to have other people involved to break up the monotony that working in a home studio, largely self-contained, can create. I’ve been pushing myself beyond my limits vocally and I’m psyched to say that it’s paying off.

Anyway, my 15 minute break is up - time to get back to mixing. I’ll occasionally post clips and updates on the Ill-Advised Instagram @illadvisedband and my personal account so feel free to check that out if you’re so inclined.

Until next time…
